What is personal leadership?

Updated: Jul 17

In very simple terms, personal leadership is about leading yourself.

What or who is a leader (or a good leader more to the point)?

I view a leader as someone who inspires others without force, someone who looks after and out for others, someone who you want to follow, someone who has a healthy vision for the future, and someone who does all these things from a place of love.

Personal leadership is about doing all those things for yourself:

Do you inspire you?

Are you living in an authentic way that brings you joy and satisfaction? If not, it’s probably unlikely that you’re going to inspire much of anything in yourself. Are you doing things that are fun for you? That are playful? That give you a sense of purpose? All of these things will inspire you to explore more and grow in new ways. You can absolutely inspire yourself!

Do you look out for and after yourself?

Or more commonly known as self-care. Do you take care of your body, do you protect your energy and use it in the best way for you or do you continue to burn the candle at both ends and suffer from burn out because you continue to do too much? Do you find time to exercise or to nourish your body with quality food? Do you take time for relaxation and rest? A good leader takes care of those around them. A great leader also takes care of themself!

Would you want to follow you?

Are you someone that you would want to follow? If yes, brilliant! If no, why not? Is it that you are trying to be someone else or who someone else wants you to be? Is it that you are too busy worrying about what you should be doing rather than how you are being? Are you acting out of alignment with your true self and feel like an imposter? Be who you are here to be and no one else.

Do you have a healthy vision for the future?

Are you at the centre of your vision or are you putting everyone else in the centre and losing where you fit in? Do your goals and dreams contribute to the betterment of the world around you or are they based on other people’s expectations? Are you looking to put your best self forward or are you playing small for fear of not being who others want you to be? Do you see growth and possibilities for yourself and others in the future? If not, what needs to change?

Do you love yourself unconditionally?

This includes not judging yourself, shaming yourself or feeling embarrassed about who you are. This is about accepting that every single thing about you is beautiful and unique to you. This is about forgiving yourself when you do something that you wished you’d done differently and giving yourself opportunity to grow and develop through your experiences. Do you make decisions for yourself from a place of love or a place of fear? Are you grateful for the amazing vessel you walk around in known as your body or do you always look for flaws? Do you make choices that nourish every part of you - body, mind and soul?

Whether you think you are a leader or not, I guarantee you are. The most important person you are leading is….yourself.

To live the most fulfilling life, you’ve got to start with you. Everything starts with you. The better you lead yourself, the better you will lead others, inspire others and help others.

And starting with you starts with knowing yourself better. Spend time getting to know the real you. It’s the best you and we all want to see the best you.

I always felt like I didn’t quite belong or didn’t quite fit the mold. I still feel that way to be perfectly honest. I used to think that I needed to work on myself and change to fit in. But in reality, what I really needed to do was lean into being more me rather than someone else’s vision of me. And this includes taking responsibility for me in every way possible. Embracing all the unique parts and working out how to bring more of that into everything I do. This is very much still a practice for me but it feels so right when I do it. When I stop dimming the light of the real me and let it shine instead, it feels better and life becomes better and more beautiful.

There are two very clear things that have helped me with this:

  1. Being around people who make me feel good about myself while being 100% myself

  2. Understanding my Human Design. This explained so much to me about me. It finally made sense why I do things a certain way or feel things a certain way. Why I continued to get burnt out and why I feel like an energizer bunny when doing things that light me up.

How is your personal leadership? Are you a great self leader or do you need to do some inner work and lead yourself better?

If you’re curious about how Human Design might help you understand yourself better, download your free chart from the menu above and get started. I promise it’s a journey worth taking.
